UGA SCHOOL OF LAW INCREASES ITS INTERNATIONAL IMPACT

Tuesday, November 20, 2001 WRITER: Heidi Murphy, 706/542-5172, hmurphy@uga.edu CONTACTS: María Giménez, 706/542-5138 David Shipley, 706/542-7140 UGA SCHOOL OF LAW INCREASES ITS INTERNATIONAL IMPACT ATHENS, Ga. - The University of Georgia School of Law is expanding its International Judicial Training Program through the Dean Rusk Center - International, Comparative and Graduate Legal Studies and in collaboration with the Institute of Continuing Judicial Education. This year, over 30 judges and court personnel will be trained through the IJTP, a significant increase from the 15 professionals trained last year. Starting Sunday, November 25, 18 Brazilians will arrive for a two-week training program on effective judicial administration. The group will be comprised of justices, judges, lawyers and clerks from the state of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil. School of Law Dean and ICJE Board of Trustees member David Shipley expressed great pleasure over the expansion of this international training program. This type of growth speaks very highly of the strengths of our law school and ICJE, especially in the international arena. To almost double the participation in any training program in one year is tremendous, he said. The IJTP on effective judicial administration will be taught by UGA law school faculty and judges from the state of Georgia. The program will address ethics and professionalism, day-to-day management of the court system and court technology in addition to the principles of judicial independence that govern judicial practice in the United States. The directors of the program are María Eugenia Giménez of the Dean Rusk Center and Richard Reaves of the ICJE. This program began four years ago with a small group of Brazilians. Since then, judicial personnel from Ghana, Africa, have also participated. The next group from Ghana will visit in March 2002. #
