The identification of the Archaea as a third primary lineage of life and their adaptation to extreme environmental conditions have generated considerable interest in the molecular biology of these organisms. Most progress in the investigation of archaeal mobile genetic elements, i.e. viruses, plasmids and insertion sequences, has been made in the halophilic branch while only limited knowledge was available about mobile elements of methanogens (reviewed in Chapter 1).
