Biological nitrogen fixation is the microbial process by which atmospheric dinitrogen (N <sub><font size="-1">2</font></sub> ) is reduced to ammonia. In all microbes studied, dinitrogen reduction is catalyzed by a highly conserved enzyme complex, called nitrogenase.
