A FORTRAN 77 programming environment for continuous simulation of agro-ecological processes, such as crop growth and calculation of water balances is presented. This system, called FSE (FORTRAN Simulation Environment), consists of a main program, weather data and utilities for performing specific tasks. The model equations have to be defined in one or more subroutines that are called by the main program. Both simple and complex crop growth models can be written as model subroutines, driven by FSE. The FSE environment is flexible, retrieves weather data from file, enables easy input of parameters and initial states and has the capability to carry out reruns on these parameter values.
