The characteristics and development of thermophilic anaerobic sludge in upflow staged sludge bed (USSB) reactors were studied. The compartmentalized reactors were inoculated with partially crushed mesophilic granular sludge and then fed with either a mixture of volatile fatty acids (VFA) or a mixture of sucrose and VFA. The staged degradation of the soluble substrate in the various compartments led to a clear segregation of specific types of biomass along the height of the reactor, particularly in reactors fed with the sucrose-VFA mixture.
