Veranderingen in het bot rond permucosale implantaten kunnen worden veroorzaakt door biomechanische factoren. Computermodellen worden gebruikt om plaats en hoogte van spanningen in het bot te berekenen. Bouw van modellen en berekening vindt plaats met behulp van de eindige-elementenmethode. Verdere ontwikkeling van software en hardware maakte het 25 jaar geleden mogelijk om complexere driedimensionale modellen te bouwen.
