Potato ( Solanum tuberosum L.) is one of the most important crops in the world. The oomycete Phytophthora infestans (Mont. de Bary) is the causal agent of late blight which is the most devastating disease of the cultivated potato. It causes economic losses of several billion US dollars in crop production and protection annually worldwide. To control this disease, the application of enormous amounts of chemicals is required, which is expensive and environmentally unsafe.
