White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is the most important viral pathogen of cultured penaeid shrimp worldwide. Since the initial discovery of the virus in<st1:country-region w:st="on">Taiwan</st1:country-region>in 1992, it has spread to shrimp farming regions in Southeast Asia, the<st1:country-region w:st="on">Americas</st1:country-region>, Europe and the<st1:place w:st="on">Middle East</st1:place>causing major economic losses.
