De rijke variëteit aan intrigerende fysische eigenschappen die gevonden wordt binnen de overgangsmetaaloxiden, heeft een niet aflatende interesse opgewekt naar het onderzoek van deze klasse van materialen. De interactie tussen lading, baan, rooster en spin vrijheidsgraden in deze materialen, speelt een hoofdrol in een aantal opwindende en nieuwe eigenschapen waaronder hoge temperatuur supergeleiding, kolossale magnetoweerstand en multiferroi gedrag. Dit proefschrift belicht de rijke verscheidenheid aan lading-, baan-, rooster- en spingeordende toestanden van enige overgangsmetaaloxides en de intrigerende statische en dynamische eigenschappen voortkomend uit deze ordening.
