The structure of the hydrophilic part of the ATP synthase from chloroplasts (CF1) has been further investigated by electron microscopy and image analysis of negatively stained samples. The projections of three different types of CF1 were analyzed: the holoenzyme with five different subunits and two CF1 particles depleted of δ and of δ,ε, respectively. About 1000 images of molecular projections of each of the three types were analyzed. They were aligned relative to different reference images and were then submitted to a multivariate statistical classification procedure.
