Background. The worldwide increase in end-stage renal disease has been alleged to be associated with insulin resistance-related conditions. Insulin resistance and the concomitant compensatory hyperinsulinaemia may accelerate age-related decline in renal function through inducing glomerular hyperfiltration, even in nondiabetic subjects.
