To summarise, evidence suggests that protein-energy malnutrition is associated with mor-bidity and mortality in chronic hemodialysis patients. Urea kinetics are used as a clinical marker for protein intake and oxidation. Chapter 2 focuses on the relation between pro-tein and urea metabolism, which is more complicated than initially thought. Since malnu-trition is present in chronic hemodialysis patients, and protein metabolism is not disturbed during fasting, we measured the response to a protein-enriched meal in hemodialysis and control subjects to show whether hemodialysis patients have a disturbance in the utilisa-tion of ingested protein
