The strong association of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies with various forms of systemic vasculitis suggests a role for these autoantibodies in the pathophysiology of systemic vasculitis. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that release of neutrophil lysosomal enzymes in the presence of an anti-myeloperoxidase (anti-MPO) immune response may underlie the development of systemic vasculitis.
