The main aim of this study is to increase insight in the underlying causes of deforestation and forest degradation by analysing the factors that induce unsustainable land use. Several types of actors involved in the deforestation process are taken into account: the decision-making processes of various economic agents are discussed, paying attention to the factors that influence either directly or indirectly the way in which they use the forests. The analysis may help to determine the responses of each of the actors to policy measures aimed at reducing the rate of tropical forest loss so that the effectiveness of these instruments can be assessed
