De serotonine-receptor 5-HT7 komt voor in bepaalde delen van de hersenen van de mens en is waarschijnlijk betrokken bij aandoeningen als migraine, depressiviteit en slaapstoornissen. In het proefschrift van Erik Vermeulen wordt het werkingsmechanisme van deze receptor onderzocht. Vermeulen synthetiseerde chemische stoffen die de receptor activeren of juist blokkeren en bestudeerde de verschillen in stuctuur van deze stoffen. Het onderzoek levert een bijdrage aan het verder in kaart brengen van de biologische functie van de 5-HT7 receptor en de ontwikkeling van medicijnen voor de genoemde aandoeningen
