Although most reported biogenic Mn oxides are hexagonal birnessites, other types of biogenic Mn oxides also commonly occur in the environment. Compared to hexagonal birnessites, the sorption characteristics and the underlying mechanism of adsorption of heavy-metal ions to those of the other biogenic Mn oxides are still rarely addressed. A strain of Mn-oxidizing bacteria isolated from Claypani-Udic Argosols was identified as Bacillus with 16S rRNA sequencing analysis. The bacterial Mn(II) oxidation product is a poorly crystallized bixbyite-like Mn2O3 (alpha-Mn2O3).
