This study sought to determine rates of prescription diversion, what medications are diverted, and what risk factors predict diversion. Surveys from 554 respondents in the College Life Study (CLS) who had been prescribed a medication were obtained and examined. Prevalence estimates for diversion were computed for four types of medications. Regressions were run testing for predictive effects of low self-control, prior deviance, and social bonds on diversion. Almost one third (31%) of students reporting either sharing or selling a prescription in their lifetime. Prescription ADHD medications were most likely to be diverted.
