Mg alloys are interesting for many applications due to their high strength to weight ratio, biocompatibility, high abundance and non-toxicity. Thanks to their low standard oxidation/reduction potential and high volumetric and gravimetric capacities it is also a perspective anode material for energy applications. Use of Mg is limited by its uncontrolled localized corrosion and so-called Negative Difference Effect (NDE). The latter indicates that cathodic water reduction increases under anodic polarization. Change of the electrolyte can help to control Mg reactivity.
