Solid-state white light sources using light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are a breakthrough technology in the lighting and display markets, leading to significant energy savings. Typical currently commercialized LED devices are based on the blue chip emission conversion by yellow (YAG:Ce3+) and red (Eu2+-doped matrix) phosphors. These photoluminescent materials all contain rare earth (RE) ions in their composition. RE elements are associated with environmental, economic and geopolitical issues related to the polluting extraction and the production monopoly by only a few countries, making them critical materials.
