The theme of « surveillance society » emerged in the public and academic sphere during the last third of the XXth century in reaction to the deployment of vast devices of police, administrative and commercial surveillance. The considerable amount of empirical results produced within the field of surveillance studies reveals the magnitude of these practices. However, their meaning remains problematic : should it lead us to think the general category of power anew ? Or does the notion of surveillance society actually refer to a historical transformation of the very structure of contemporary societies ?
