Photocatalysts such as zinc oxide (ZnO) can mineralize toxic and persistent organic pollutants present in wastewaters. Unfortunately, these photocatalysts loose part of their effectiveness because they need to be activated by UV light, which has a limited penetration depth in highly contaminated wastewaters.
