Every year millions of Afro-Palaectic waterbirds migrate between Eurasia and the Sahelo-Saharan wintering wetlands. However, international counts show a decline in some populations. Causes have been identified such as habitat degradation and hunting. However, very few studies have been carried out on these wintering areas and even fewer on the human use of the "waterbird" resource.
