In Casta painting, Costumbrismo, and Mexican Modernism, artists rendered women and food together as a way of defining the region\u27s culture and identity. The thesis demonstrates how due to the largely shifting socio-political environment over the course of the Colonial, Independence, and Postrevolutionary eras in Mexico, the motivations of artists changed and thus, so did how they represented women and food together. Changes from the colonial to the post-colonial structure, the artist being from Mexico versus Europe, and the gender of the artist, all affected the narratives of the nation presented in images of women with food
