Microenterprises and the informal sector: A case study on informal sector microentrepreneurs belonging to the Philippine retail industry

Microenterprises have dominated the enterprising environment in the Philippines where a lot of these operate within the informal sector of the economy. While a number of discussions in the literature revolve around government interventions and the economic issues of microenterprises, this study explored the entrepreneurial process of microentrepreneurs and the factors that influence their choice of economic sector. Using a case study methodology, it was determined that life experiences of microentrepreneurs, their personal characteristics and government policies are significant factors which led microentrepreneurs in Angeles City, Pampanga to operate firms within the informal sector. The research concluded with The Microentrepreneurial Cycle model which offers fourteen(14) propositions that future studies may pursue concerning microentrepreneurs, the business environment and the economic sectors
