International audienceLa nouvelle génération d’horloges atomiques, basées sur les transitions optiques de diverses espèces (strontium, mercure, ytterbium …), permet de réaliser des références de fréquence avec un contrôle de 18 chiffres significatifs, surpassant ainsi déjà l’incertitude de la définition actuelle (césium) d’un facteur 100. Les ~20 horloges optiques en exploitation dans le monde sont ainsi les instruments les plus exacts jamais construits par l’homme.Leur extraordinaire résolution statistique, 16 chiffres significatifs en une seule mesure, permet de résoudre très rapidement de minuscules effets décalant la fréquence propre des atomes.
