ARCHEOLOGICAL REMAINS ALONG THE BORDER REGION OF BALKAN AREA: QUESTIONS ABOUT INTERPRETATION AND MUSEALISATION

Looking at the border region of the Balkan area, at that Limes that has to be consider as Roman, but also Byzantine under the strong policy of the emperor Justinian I, today we have the possibility to enter in contact with the past through archaeological excavation campaigns, especially in the country of Serbia, that has been well studied along the years by international researches. Unearthing new goods, immediately we have problems regarding the conservation, protection, valorization and management of the architectonical Cultural Heritage, in the future idea of a musealisation activity on the site, that let the site been interpreted and understood by visitors. This process is related to the possibility of increasing the receptive, communicative and cultural potential of the cultural heritage itself. The enhancement or valorisation (from Italian “valorizzazione”) of the object starts from the moment of its recognition as cultural heritage and depends both on the level and type of knowledge about its historical and artistic significance, and on its explanation and, therefore, its dissemination. The interpretation and the meaning of a cultural heritage cannot refer to the moment of its discovery any more. The first action useful to support the dissemination is the musealisation method, which includes the conservation of the object, not only in passive terms, but also by several activities. The conservation process must also consider the wear and tear becoming from the use of the object itself. Every object considered as a cultural heritage must be “used”
