© Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.An exemplary mechanical design optimization study of the multi-axle steering mechanism of an 8×8 vehicle is summarized. Firstly, joint forces of the mechanism were determined for the critical service conditions by using the multibody dynamics (MBD) model of the vehicle. Reaction forces obtained for the worst load case scenario were used for the finite element (FE) analysis of the full linkage. Analysis showed that, factor of safety of the central control arm, which is the critical part of the system is lower than the targeted value.
