Sustainable building – A step towards sustainable development? : A study of Bo01’s and Hammarby Sjöstad’s path from vision to built reality

The design of buildings is today considered to be crucial for obtaining sustainable development. Research concerning sustainable building is considered to be a Swedish area of strength and development projects as Hammarby Sjöstad and Bo01 are often pointed out as Swedish prime examples of sustainable building. Some still argue though, that that these projects should not be presented as sustainable, due to its incompetence to meet their objectives. This contradiction has attracted my curiosity. By doing this study I hope to gain understanding about the difficulties Bo01 and Hammarby Sjöstad are surrounded with and its significance for sustainable development. The research questions that I hope to answer are: Are there differences between the perception of sustainable building in the two selected development projects (see section 1.4.3) based on its visions and objectives? Why have these projects for sustainable urban development difficulties to achieve their objectives? Is Hammarby Sjöstad and Boo01 in theory and in practice a step towards sustainable development, according to theories for sustainable building (see section 1.4.3)? To answer these research questions, I have chosen to do a comparative case study. In my result, I found that the projects are relatively similar in regard to visions and objectives, what distinguishes them is that the project in Hammarby Sjöstad aimed to create an area with multifunctional buildings that was intended to promote ecological responsibility. This objective was not considered in the creation of Bo01. As I studied the project visions and results against theory of sustainable development I realised that the lack of external links and difficulties in the ability to create attitude and behavioural changes are significant problems that the projects are surrounded with. To claim that the projects are a move towards sustainable development can therefore seem difficult, but the decision lies in the perception of how sustainability can be reached, not the result. The projects have given rise to a dialogue and a quest for sustainable building; therefore, the projects are a step towards sustainable development. But they still have a crucial challenge ahead, to keep the dialogue for sustainable development alive.Bebyggelsens utformning anses idag vara en avgörande del för målet om den hållbara utvecklingen. Forskning kring hållbart samhällsbyggande anses vara ett svenskt styrkeområde och utvecklingsprojekt som Hammarby Sjöstad och Bo01 pekas ofta ut som de svenska paradexemplen. Samtidigt menar vissa att dessa projekt inte alls borde presenteras som hållbara på grund av dess inkompetens att uppfylla målen. Denna motsägelse har väckt min nyfikenhet och jag vill med denna studie gå till botten med Hammarby Sjöstads och Bo01:s svårigheter och vad dess betydelse är för den hållbara utvecklingen. De frågeställningar jag valt som förhoppningsvis kan besvara detta är: Finns det skillnader mellan uppfattningen av hållbart byggande i de två valda utvecklingsprojekten (se avsnitt 1.4.3) baserat på deras respektive visioner och mål? Varför har dessa studerade projekt för hållbart urbant byggande svårt att nå sina uppsatta mål? Är Hammarby Sjöstad och Bo01 i teori och praktik ett led i den hållbara utvecklingen enligt teorier för hållbart byggande (se avsnitt 1.4.3)? För att kunna besvara dessa frågor har en komparativ fallstudie gjorts. I uppsatsens resultat framkommer det att projekten är relativt lika i hänsyn till visioner och mål, det som skiljer dem är att projektet i Hammarby Sjöstad syftade till att skapa ett område med hög funktionsblandning och främja ett ekologiskt ansvarstagande, vilket inte beaktades i skapandet av Bo01. När projektens visioner och resultat studerades mot teori för hållbar utveckling gick det att se att dess svaga externa förankring samt brister i förmågan att skapa attityd- och beteendeförändringar är betydande problem som projekten omfattas av. Att påstå att projekten är ett led i den hållbara utvecklingen kan därför tyckas svårt, men avgörandet ligger i synen på hur hållbarhet kan skapas, inte resultatet. I och med att det skapats en dialog och strävan om det hållbara byggandet är projekten ett led i den hållbara utvecklingen. De har dock kvar en avgörande utmaning, att hålla dialogen om den hållbara utvecklingen levande.
