Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi Öğrencilerinin Fiziksel Bağımlılık Düzeyleri

Introduction: Tobacco use and substance addiction are the leading causes of general health allover the world. The aim of this study is to investigate the substance addiction levels and causesof dentistry students.Materials and methods: Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Dentistry 1st grade students(n=48) were included in our study. Participants were asked questions about their demographiccharacteristics and substance addiction. Statistical analysis was completed using the chi-suqaretest and IBM SPSS Statistics 24 program.Results: It was observed that the mean age of the participants was 19.22, 46% (n=22) werefemale and 54% (n=26) were male. It was determined that 56% of them live in a city center and62% of them have nuclear family type. While 68% of the participants stated their family incomeas average, 54% defined their health status as good. 21% of our students stated that they smokeand 77% of them drink alcohol. It was determined that as the education level of the mother andthe the father increased, the rate of smoking decreased (p<0.05). It was determined that if themother or father smoked, the level of smoking increased in the participants (p<0.05).Conclusion: It was determined that the age of onset of smoking and alcohol use of theparticipants coincided with the period when they were studying at university. For this reason,more extensive information about smoking, alcohol use and its harms should be included indentistry faculties. In addition to increasing the knowledge level of students, their attitudes andbehaviors related to addictions should be improved.Keywords: dentistry student, alcohol, tobacco products
