A GIANT PILOMATRIXOMA IN A RARE LOCALIZATION : REPORT OF A CASE AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE

Pilomatrixoma is a rare benign skin appendage neoplasm that arises from hair matrix cells. Its percentage is 0.1 among the skin tumors and is mostly seen in Caucasians. The most common localization is head and neck region. It has been diagnosed usually in the first two decades of life. Female/male ratio is 3/2. The tumor is histopathologically consists of basoloid cells, shadow cells, keratin filaments, cornified material, and giant cells. Pilomatrixoma is generally smaller than 3 cm in diameter and manifests as an asymptomatic, solitary firm nodule. Multiple lesions may rarely be seen. Malignant variants of pilomatrixoma have also been reported. Recommended treatment is surgical excision. After surgical treatment, 2-6% of recurrence has been documented. In this study, a giant pilomatrixoma seen in upper extremity and review of the literature is presented
