The mechanism(s) by which glucosensing neurons detect fluctuations in glucose remains largely unknown. In the pancreatic β-cell, ATP-sensitive K+ channels (KATP channels) play a key role in glucosensing by providing a link between neuronal metabolism and membrane potential.
