An overview of the Observational Method in geotechnical engineering is given and its wider application to design under conditions of uncertainty is indicated. The value of modelling the design process is discussed and a description is given of three key features of a particular type of process model which has been developed. Proposals are made for applications and future developments of the model. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD E102464
