Accommodating performance-based seismic design in offshore foundations can allow for substantial reductions in foundation depth, and consequently major cost savings. To validate the seismic performance of a suction caisson-type manifold foundation that was significantly smaller than the conventional design, dynamic centrifuge testing was performed. Two caissons of different depths were installed in normally consolidated clay and subjected to a series of earthquake vibrations. Strength limitations in the clay caused a smaller response in the shallower foundation. The tested design remained within its design limits and was therefore verified
