This thesis examines portrayals of homes and gardens in magazines, advice books, public health discourse and government propaganda in mid-twentieth-century Britain, analysing representations of healthy domesticity inside and outside the home, and in transition between the two. Taking an environmental perspective, it explores the implications of the association of housewives with hygiene and care for choices in shopping, the home and the garden. Vegetables were regarded as essential to health yet might still have soil on them. Waste, when converted into compost, was seen as a component of healthy soil, yet whilst in the process of decay had associations with risk to health.
