La patrimonialisation, miroir de choix socio-spatiaux et effets territoriaux. Apports de la géographie humaine et sociale.

This habilitation à diriger des recherches provides a synthesis and put into perspectives the research carried out over the last fifteen years, in human and social geography, on the stakes of heritage-making. Following the doctoral research defended in 2007, this theme has indeed been at the heart of my research activities, with one central question: how do spatialized elements become what makes heritage? And at the same time, what are the spatial and territorial effects of such dynamics, especially regarding tourism issues? During the last fifteen years, these reflections have been developed and enriched by several case studies having the particularity to concern archaeological sites, whether rock art sites or prehistoric pile dwelling sites, some of them also being inscribed on the World Heritage List. Sometimes not easily visible (cave or underwater context), associated with the long civilizational time, this type of site is indeed particularly interesting to question the socio-spatial processes by which spatialized elements become heritage and, through feedback loops, the spatial effects of these heritage dynamics. Therefore, this habilitation à diriger des recherches brings into perspective the following case studies: the "Chauvet cave" case study and its facsimile in the Ardèche gorges, rock engravings in the Haute-Maurienne, pre-Columbian engraved rocks in the Guadeloupe islands, rock art sites in the Drakensberg massif (South Africa/Lesotho), rock art sites in the Makgabeng plateau (South Africa), prehistoric pile dwelling sites around the Alps (Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Switzerland). In accordance with the requirements of the demonstration, these main case studies were completed by secondary case studies: rock art sites in the Vézère valley, rock art sites around Mount Bego (Mercantour), rock art sites in Valcamonica (Lombardy), and rock art sites in Cantabria (Spain).This habilitation is composed of two volumes. The first volume, entitled "Positioning, results and perspectives", is organized around two main parts. Mobilizing theoretical, methodological and ethical elements, the first part of volume 1 exposes and investigates my practice as a researcher and the way I carry out the geographical approach. This phase of contextualization and reflexive analysis is essential in order to consider both the research activities undertaken over the past fifteen years and to modestly present the contributions of my work to the analysis of heritage-making issues, by positioning the latter in their respective contexts of production and enunciation. After reflecting on the "subject-researcher Mélanie Duval" (chapter I), the next three chapters introduce the cornerstones around which my practice of geography is organized: the systemic approach (chapter II), the framework of comparative analysis (chapter III) and the empirical approach (chapter IV). Building on this foundation, my practice as a geographer has also been enriched by pluri- and interdisciplinary approaches (chapter V) and by various forms of partnership with the people involved in the territories investigated (chapter VI). With the framework of my research exposed, the second part of volume 1 outlines the main contributions of the research conducted over the last fifteen years. This part, dedicated to the results, is organized in three chapters (Chapters VII, VIII and IX), which correspond to the three research axes that have structured my work since 2008. Putting into perspective several sites inscribed (or candidate) on the World Heritage List, Chapter VII questions the links between the spatial forms taken by UNESCO properties and the way they are constructed. Following a second axis of research, chapter VIII discusses the modalities of articulation between the heritage field and the tourism field, with as its cornerstone, the notion of resource. Finally, Chapter IX approaches the heritage issue from an axiological approach and questions the relationship between the observed heritage dynamics and the different social and moral values mobilized by the stakeholders involved in the heritage process. The general conclusion of volume 1, entitled "General conclusions and research perspectives", returns to the contributions of the geographical approach in the analysis of the stakes of patrimonialization and exposes my short, medium and long term research perspectives.Entitled "Curriculum vitae and collection of selected publications", the second volume of this habilitation is also composed of two parts. In coherence with its title, the first part details all my research activities since 2008. Considering the whole of my scientific production these last fifteen years, the second part of volume 2 is composed of 29 selected publications organized in relation with the scientific results discussed in the second part of volume 1.Cette habilitation à diriger des recherches propose une synthèse et une mise en perspective des recherches conduites ces quinze dernières années, en géographie humaine et sociale, sur les enjeux de la patrimonialisation. Dans la continuité de la recherche doctorale défendue en 2007, cette thématique a en effet été au cœur de mes activités de recherche, avec comme interrogation centrale : comment des éléments spatialisés deviennent ce qui fait patrimoine ? Et dans le même temps, quels sont les effets spatiaux et territoriaux de telles dynamiques, en lien notamment avec des problématiques touristiques ? Durant ces quinze dernières années, ces réflexions ont été travaillées et alimentées par plusieurs études de cas ayant la particularité de concerner des sites archéologiques, que ce soit des sites d’art rupestre ou encore des sites palafittiques préhistoriques, certains d’entre eux étant également inscrits sur la Liste du patrimoine mondial. Parfois peu visibles (contexte souterrain ou subaquatique), liés au temps long civilisationnel, ce type de site est en effet particulièrement intéressant pour questionner les processus socio-spatiaux par lesquels des éléments spatialisés deviennent du patrimoine et, par des boucles de rétroaction, les effets spatiaux de ces dynamiques patrimoniales. Dès lors, cette habilitation à diriger des recherches met en perspective les études de cas suivantes : l’étude de cas « grotte Chauvet » et son fac-similé dans les gorges de l’Ardèche, les gravures rupestres en Haute-Maurienne, les roches gravées précolombiennes dans les îles de la Guadeloupe, les sites d’art rupestre dans le massif du Drakensberg (Afrique du Sud/Lesotho), les sites d’art rupestre du plateau du Makgabeng (Afrique du Sud), les sites palafittiques préhistoriques autour des Alpes. Suivant les besoins de la démonstration, ces études de cas principales ont été complétées par des études de cas secondaires : les sites d’art rupestre dans la vallée de la Vézère, les sites d’art rupestre autour du mont Bégo (Mercantour), les sites d’art rupestre du Valcamonica (Lombardie) ainsi que les sites d’art rupestre en Cantabrie (Espagne).Cette habilitation se compose de deux volumes. Après une réflexion sur le « sujet-cherchant Mélanie Duval » (chapitre I), les trois chapitres suivants présentent les piliers autour desquels s’organise ma pratique de la géographie : l’approche systémique (chapitre II), le cadre de l’analyse comparative (chapitre III) et la démarche empirique (chapitre IV). Forte de cette base, ma pratique en tant que géographe s’est également nourrie de démarches pluri- et interdisciplinaires (chapitre V) et de différentes formes partenariales avec les acteurs des territoires investigués (chapitre VI). Le cadre de ma recherche ayant été exposé, la seconde partie du volume 1 présente les principaux apports des recherches conduites ces quinze dernières années. Cette partie dédiée aux résultats est organisée en trois chapitres (chapitres VII, VIII et IX), lesquels correspondent aux trois axes de recherche ayant structuré mon travail depuis 2008. Mettant en perspective plusieurs sites inscrits (ou candidats) sur la Liste du patrimoine mondial, le chapitre VII questionne les liens entre les formes spatiales prises par les biens UNESCO et leurs modalités de construction. Suivant un deuxième axe de recherche, le chapitre VIII discute des modalités d’articulation entre le champ patrimonial et le champ touristique, avec comme pierre angulaire, la notion de ressource. Enfin, le chapitre IX aborde la problématique patrimoniale selon une approche axiologique et interroge les rapports entre les dynamiques patrimoniales observées et les différentes valeurs sociales et morales mobilisées par les parties prenantes intervenant dans le processus de patrimonialisation. La conclusion générale du volume 1, nommée « Conclusions générales et perspectives de recherche », revient sur les apports de l’approche géographique dans l’analyse des enjeux de la patrimonialisation et expose mes perspectives de recherche à court, moyen et long terme.Intitulé « Curriculum vitae et recueil de publications choisies », le second volume de cette habilitation se compose également de deux parties.
