Screening queered domesticity: six feet under, brothers & sisters and representations of transgressive home-making

Notwithstanding a significant increase in queer visibility in popular television fiction, queer representations have often been rebuked by feminist and queer theorists over their heteronormative content. However, representations of queer domesticity align with the salient debate whether or not to consider domesticity as a pillar of heteronormativity. In this paper, I will argue that drama series can represent queer domesticity from a non-heteronormative perspective. Therefore, I will draw on a conceptualization of the domestic, detached from its heteronormative interpretation. By means of a textual thematic analysis of Six Feet Under and Brothers & Sisters, I will illustrate how in these series queer characters create their own domesticities by embracing and subverting aspects of heteronormative domesticity. I will conclude by arguing that both series rather portrayed a queer desire for domesticity instead of a desire for the heteronormal
