The appearance of modern mammal orders at the beginning of the Eocene has been enigmatic for more than a century, but a number of recent discoveries and theories have attributed an important role to the poorly known Asian late Paleocene and early Eocene mammal faunas. The previously unstudied Subeng site in Inner Mongolia was explored between 1995 and 2004, and a total of 1750kg of sediment from the Bayan Ulan Beds of the Nomogen Formation was screenwashed. This yielded 15 species, from 13 different families and 8 orders. Of these, the multituberculate Mesodmops tenuis, the nyctitheriids Asionyctia guoi and Bumbanius ningi, and the carpolestid Subengius mengi are described as new taxa and their phylogenetic position is determined.
