This article proposes, first, that the Library of the future could be designed as a public 'locus aemonus' for reading and 'contemplative life', more than as a storage for books. It argues, though, that when all books become e-books, the possibility to live with the past by reading surrounded by books - in the private studiolo or the public library - gets lost
