Incorporation of anaerobic processes into wastewater treatment trains minimizes amount and enhances stability of excess sludge, but lowers energy consumption. Objectives of this study were to develop a pilot-scale anaerobic fixed-bed loop (AFBL) reactor, to select critical parameters and to investigate feasibility and performance when treating municipal wastewater under real field conditions. Hydraulic residence tirnes (HRTs) of 0.23, 0.28 and 0.36 days were implemented at temperatures of 25 degrees C, 30 degrees C and 35 degrees C, respectively.
