This paper focuses on verb based particles of direct address in West Flemish and Romanian. The purpose is to see to what extent the interpretation of these particles can be related to their syntactic properties, and what the syntactic configuration responsible for such interpretation might be. The analysis capitalizes on cartographic extensions of the clause hierarchy to the conversational pragmatics field and argues for the representation of a Speech Act Projection whose properties may account for the distributional restrictions that we see not only with verb based particles but also with the vocative phrases that often accompany these particles
