The Gesta episcoporum Cameracensium present both a grand narrative history of episcopal succession in Cambrai, and a collection of episodes legitimizing contemporary episcopal politics. However, an analysis of the structure, the content, and the literary, ecclesiastical and political contexts of this work, shows how it went beyond those two purposes. The Gesta were clearly conceived to function together with a large set of other contemporary texts and deeds. This observation leads to two conclusions. First, the Cambresian gesta were not an autonomous genre, but participated in an inter-medial episcopal self-representation.
