The book presents a selection of 93 images out of 42.000 colonial photographs from the collections of the Royal Museum of Central Africa in Tervuren. By having returned to the original glass plates and treating the scans with contemporary technologies, these images appear here for the first time in full detail. The selection is the result of confronting the gaze of a contemporary photographer, Carl De Keyzer (member of the Magnum-agency) and an architectural historian specialized in the colonial history of the Congo, Johan Lagae. An essay of Johan Lagae gives context to the images, while the Congolese historian Jacob Sabakinu Kivilu and visual historian Patricia Hayes from Cape Town have each selected and commented some of the selected phot...
