Whether education fosters social participation or rather reproduces an existing order, is a recurring discussion. In this debate, ‘equal opportunities’ are frequently presented as a lever for the universal right to education. This contribution focuses on four notions of equal opportunities, each of which refers to a different understanding of justice. In this article, the meaning of these conceptions in relation to the life practices of irregular migrants is explored. That brings us to the question how the concept of equal opportunities can contribute to the realisation of a universal right to education for all.
