Where is Latin America headed? Uneven development in the periphery in the globalization era

La hegemonía neoliberal a fines del siglo pasado opacó enfoques teóricos originales latinoamericanos, como el estructuralismo y la escuela de la dependencia. Tanto el ideario neoliberal como algunas perspectivas críticas "posdependentistas" han postulado que las diferencias nacionales tienden a perder relevancia en el marco de la globalización. En este artículo se sostiene otra hipótesis: que en lugar de una convergencia entre centro y periferia, se está produciendo una creciente bifurcación de la periferia misma. Para ponerla a prueba se compara la evolución de dos regiones: el este de Asia y América Latina.The neoliberal hegemony late in last century has overshadowed Latin America?s original theoretical approaches such as structuralism and dependency theory. Both neoliberal and "post-dependecy" approaches have postulated that national diffe- rences tend to disappear with globalization. This article argues another hypothesis: that instead of a "convergence" between Center and Periphery is taking place a growing bifurcation of the Periphery.
