The Lyrical Novel : a study of L.-F. Céline's work

Tout au long de son œuvre, Céline a été à la poursuite d’une nouvelle forme d’écriture qui soit à même d’exprimer l’émotion, entendue comme la part la plus intime et la plus mystérieuse de l’être, une force à la fois organique et spirituelle, assimilable à l’énergie vitale. Cette émotion, presque de l’ordre de l’indicible, s’oppose à la sentimentalité, à l’épanchement affectif et au narcissisme littéraire. Pour tâcher de la saisir, l’auteur a créé un genre nouveau, aux confins du roman et de la poésie, le roman lyrique. La première partie de ce travail fait apparaître que le je, chez Céline, d’abord simple support de la narration, se fait progressivement sujet lyrique, dans un récit qui cède peu à peu la place à l’expression de la subjectivité, au gré des errements de la mémoire et des élans de l’imagination. Tout en se plaçant au centre de son œuvre, l’écrivain s’appuie cependant sur la double tradition du roman réaliste et du roman comique pour mettre à distance sa propre sensibilité par le biais de l’humour et du noircissement. La seconde partie est consacrée à l’imaginaire lyrique : les grandes thématiques de la tradition poétique y resurgissent, quoique de manière paradoxale et novatrice, tandis que se déploie un imaginaire proprement célinien, très original, reflet de la poétique lyrique de l’auteur. Nous montrons enfin comment Céline tente d’animer le langage littéraire en cassant la logique du discours, puisant aux sources vives de la langue et rythmant son texte pour faire advenir une voix unique, à la fois parole et chant, véritable continuum émotif et musical.Throughout his work, Céline has been seeking a new form of writing, that might be able to express emotion understood as the most intimate and mysterious part of Being, a force both organic and spiritual, akin to vital energy. Thus apprehended, emotion verges on the ineffable and stands in opposition to mere sentimentality, uncurbed outpouring of feelings and literary narcissism. In his endeavours to capture it, the author went on to create a new genre, on the edge between novel and poetry, the lyrical novel. The first part of this study shows that the I, that of a conventional narrator to start with, increasingly becomes in Céline’s work a lyrical subject: the storytelling is more and more overwhelmed with subjective expression, following along the intricacies of memory and the impulses of imagination. Despite focusing on the ego in his work, the author draws upon the twofold tradition of the comic novel and the realistic novel in order to keep his own sensibility at bay thanks both to humor and to blackening. The second part is devoted to the lyrical texture of Céline’s imaginary world: several enduring themes of the poetic tradition find a new life, although in quite a surprising manner, while the author develops his own images, such as to reflect his deeply lyrical aesthetics. We end this study by addressing the way in which Céline, in his search for a lively literary language, strives to break the logical course of speech, draws on the French idiom’s resources and works on the rhythm of his text so as to produce a voice of his own, speaking and singing at the same time, and thus forming a musical and emotive continuum
