This research studies the effects of the euro-crisis on the legitimacy of democracy. It approaches essentially as an ideological concept, with a crucial role in the legitimation of the capitalist system. Democracy is a product of social struggles; and reflects a hegemonic conception of democracy. In Portugal this conception was built upon a historical contract based on Europe and the revolution. The crisis made the contradictions within these concepts themselves emerge and created a dissensus about democracy
