This study analyzes the influence of African Vodou in popular religion, art, and culture of the Dominican Republic. The analysis is based on data collected in field research during the summers of 2010 and 2011 in various towns and communities including, Batey Libertad, Batey Cerro Gordo, Santiago, Dajabón, Samaná, Santo Domingo, Villa Mella, La Romana, San Pedro de Macorís, and Baní. The article firstly discusses the popular misinterpretation of the African heritage through widespread campaigns systematically championed by the Dominican elite (Andújar 2007).
