The effect of temperature on the mechanical behaviour of clay-based geomaterials is relevant in several geotechnical applications (e.g., low enthalpy geothermal systems, nuclear waste disposal, and heating in rapid shear deformation). According to literature, clay exhibits irreversible contraction in normally consolidated (NC) states and reversible expansion in highly overconsolidated (OC) states upon heating and subsequent cooling.
