Very few publications address the analysis or design of reinforced masonry shells. In the paper, the usage of elastic and plastic approaches for the analysis and design of masonry arches is discussed, with respect to the application of a point load and a two-pinned arch. The results of a recent experimental program are also briefly reviewed and discussed in light of the results from numerical simulations using the finite element method. Finally, practical and conservative design recommendations are proposed.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) - POCTI-ECM-38071-2001, “Strengthening of masonry arches with composite materials”.
