F. circinatum infects species of the Pinus genus and green Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), causing cankers surrounding branches, aerial roots and shoots. Infection is often accompanied by intense resin secretion. Disease symptoms can be observed at any time of the year. The pathogen can covertly infect pine seeds and cause root rot. Hosts of greatest importance in the PRA area are: P sylvestris, P. strobus, P.contorta and P. menziesii. Currently, the pathogen has spread to the Americas, Asia, Africa and southern Europe, where it has caused great havoc. Most often, its first outbreaks in new areas were recorded in nurseries.
